Women make testosterone, which plays a role in muscle development, motivation, drive, libido, sexual performance, confidence and how we see ourselves.
In menstruating women, testosterone is released shortly after the peak estrogen day, before and during ovulation.
Women may have more desire for sex around that time, which may support reproduction.
Testosterone is made in the ovaries as well as the adrenal glands.
During perimenopause and menopause, the ovaries and adrenal glands may produce lower levels of sex hormones.
If your adrenal glands are supported and you manage stress, you may still make a lot of testosterone.
Ideally, I like to see women’s testosterone levels on lab testing somewhere between 20 and 50.
Not all women need testosterone treatment. If you have low libido, fatigue and trouble putting on muscle mass, it may help.
DHEA may also be something to look into because it can convert into testosterone.
